The native ingenuity of the poorer country people of Wales was never tested more fully than in building the dwellings that they frequently had to erect for themselves, veritable home-made homes.
These small dwellings, often accompanied by no more land than a garden or at best a small-holding insufficient to provide a living, are known as cottages, and their inhabitants as cottagers.
