Stephen Hughes Elected Vice-President For Wales - ICOMOS-UK AGM

At the ICOMOS-UK AGM in June, Stephen Hughes BA, M Phil, FSA, FR HistS was elected Vice-President for Wales for a period of three years.

Stephen is Projects Director, Royal Commission on the Ancient & Historical Monuments of Wales. He edited the first of the international ICOMOS Thematic Studies on Canals and also worked on one on Collieries and on others. He lectures at Aberystwyth University on Welsh Chapel Architecture. He has represented ICOMOS in China and at ICOMOS Heritage Experts Meetings in Canada, the UK and the USA. He also attended the ICOMOS World Heritage Panel in Paris in 2010 and has acted as an ICOMOS Mission Expert in Poland, Belarus & France. He has written books on Welsh architecture and archaeology:

He writes: “I have been a member of ICOMOS-UK for a number of years and have had discussions with the Secretary and Committee to ensure that the recently successful Pontcysyllte Nomination followed best practice: I would like to help to apply this elsewhere in the UK. I have initiated liaison groups in Welsh archaeology and architecture. I run European projects underpinning cultural tourism and pioneering the use of digital interpretation and animations which help to extend Pride of Place to previously inaccessible audiences. I would seek to help provide training on these in the short term and promote their wider use in the long term”.
