‘Front cover design by Kyffin Williams’

I’ve always loved the covers of one particular series of Welsh castles guidebooks from the early 1960s. It had never occurred to me to find out the artist’s identity. In hindsight, it is quite obvious. A colleague spotted a short ‘bibliographic essay’ by John Kenyon in The Castle Studies Group Journal (vol. 27) which discussed the very same guidebooks. It revealed that the covers were designed by none other than Kyffin Williams (not yet Sir Kyffin!).

The covers are printed in black plus one other colour on white background using a process which I believe is called offset lithography, giving a very distinct look often found in illustrated books of the period. I think the limitations of the printing process actually enhance the bold and striking designs. Maybe it’s time to issue them as fine art prints? I’d buy one.

We were delighted to find that not only do we have the four guidebooks in our library, but that at least one – Caernarfon Castle – has two versions of the cover: the taupe one pictured in John Kenyon’s article, and another in bright orangey-red. Are there other variants? Do let us know.

Ynysfach Ironworks Project To Be Showcased At Digital Past 2015

Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust and iDEA will be presenting their award winning project on Ynysfach Ironworks in Merthyr Tydfil at this year’s Digital Past. This innovative digital interpretation project used information resulting from archaeological investigation alongside other contemporary evidence to digitally recreate in great detail the ironworks, its atmosphere and processes in great detail.

Still from visualisation of Ynysfach Ironworks
3D data was also re-used to create additional levels of immersion and engagement with the site, for example real-time exploration, and the modelling and subsequent 3D printing of artefacts.

The Ynysfach Ironworks casting house and refinery complex as an interactive view, moved with the heading and pitch of the mobile device.

My Favourite Book In The Royal Commission Library

Well if a picture is worth a thousand words, what’s a map worth? Try looking through the Railways of Great Britain: A Historical Atlas by Colonel M H Cobb. This, my favourite book in the Royal Commission library, has 646 maps, showing all the passenger railways in Great Britain with their owning companies and the opening and closing dates for each station and stretch of line, all drawn over an Ordnance Survey map base. If you’re into that sort of thing – ok, so I am! – it‘s a wonderful historical resource to have available in one place and also provides hours of browsing enjoyment.

And for Radio 4 listeners: along with the Bible and the works of Shakespeare, Cobb’s book would be my choice when castaway on my ‘Desert Island.’

Shedding Light on Rombalds Moor

We are pleased to announce that the CSI: Rombalds Moor project, shortlisted for the 2014 English Heritage Angel Award, will be showcased at Digital Past 2015 by speakers Sarah Ann Duffy, Richard Stroud and Louise Brown.

This community led project explored the application of innovative recording and visualisation techniques to record all the known prehistoric carved rocks on Rombalds and Baildon Moor in the South Pennines. Using Rock Art Monitoring forms, volunteers mapped the context of individual rock carvings and collected information on their condition. Imagery was captured to enable 3D modelling using a photogrammetric approach, alongside trials of other digital recording techniques such as Reflectance Transformation Imaging and Structure from Motion. Based on the efforts of 30 volunteers over 3 years, information on some 500 carvings was captured to assist future monitoring, management and protection.

The Library - Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales

Join us all this week as the Royal Commission celebrates our wonderful library with Blogs and Tweets in the lead up to National Libraries Day on 7 February 2015. Find out which books inspired our staff to enter the world of archaeology and watch out for our #shelfies. For news about events around the country see the National Libraries Day website at http://www.nationallibrariesday.org.uk/.

Come and see our fantastic range of books, journals, guides and pamphlets relating to archaeology, architecture, industrial archaeology and the history and heritage of Wales in our small, but perfectly formed specialist library. You are bound to find something of interest!

I particularly like the section on architecture containing a huge array of books on the various building types, their history and structural and decorative features. One of my favourite books is The Victorian House by Kit Wedd (2002) which contains beautiful photographs depicting some of the rich colour schemes and elaborate designs used by the Victorians. There are fascinating chapters on the rise of industrial estate housing, architectural styles as well as ironwork, fireplaces and chimneys.

Visit the library and see this lovely book and many others.

We are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday; 09:30-16:00; Wednesday 10:30-16:30.

Penny Icke, Information Services Manager, Royal Commission
