My favourite book in the Royal Commission’s collections is The Atlas to the life of Thomas Telford, Civil Engineer, published by Payne & Foss, London, in 1838. However, you won’t find it on the library shelves, or in the rare books section of the archive stores. We only hold a microfiche copy – and not even of the whole book. Nevertheless, the copper-plate drawings relating to the Menai Suspension Bridge, as far as I am concerned, the key pages, are all there.
The original publication is a sizeable “elephant folio” 23 x 17 inches (58.4 x 43.1cm), and opportunities to purchase a copy on the open market are very rare indeed.
