Foundation Apprentice: Office Administration

Job Description: Apprentice Scheme 2016

The Royal Commission is a Welsh Government Sponsored Body. We research and record archaeology, buildings, landscapes and maritime remains from prehistory to the present. We look after the National Monuments Record which is Wales’ permanent archive of the historic environment and contains over 2 million photographs, drawings and other documents and digital data. We also help people to learn about our rich heritage by publishing books and other documents and by attending shows and events. We give talks and lectures and also give impartial advice and information to help people manage the historic environment sustainably and ethically. We are based in Aberystwyth and employ about 30 staff. Our work covers the whole of Wales.
The Welsh Government is committed to investing in the future workforce of Wales. In support of this, the Commission is currently offering a young person between the ages of 16 to 24 the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in finance and general office administration in a national heritage organisation. This scheme will give a young person the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification and marketable skills whilst earning a salary.
An apprentice at the Royal Commission will earn a salary of £12,000 per year.

What training will be provided?
You will complete a Business Administration Foundation Apprenticeship which includes a NVQ level 2, along with other related qualifications. You will be fully supported in the workplace to develop the key skills, motivation and experience which will better equip you to gain a job in the competitive job market.

How long will the apprenticeship last?
The apprenticeship will last for a period of 15 months.

JOB PURPOSE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF ROLE:
The Executive Assistant reports directly to the Secretary who is the CEO of the Commission and is part of a team which form the Corporate Business Unit.

The Executive Assistant assists the Secretary in ensuring that the Commission complies with its governance and reporting commitments in a timely manner and in line with best practice as set out by the Welsh Government and that the Commission’s good record in this area of activity is maintained.

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales is the unique, independent national archive and investigation service for Wales, dedicated to the authoritative recording and interpretation of our rich historic environment. We operate at arm’s-length from the Welsh Government, with skilled staff providing professional advice and expert information to the public. We’re committed to delivering the best possible historic environment service for Wales, fostering greater understanding and care for our historic buildings and landscapes, and recognising the potential for heritage to help improve people’s lives.

Founded by Royal Warrant in 1908, we now receive our principal funding from the Welsh Government as a Welsh Government Sponsored Body. Through our work we:
  • Research and record archaeology, buildings, landscapes and maritime remains from prehistory to the present; 
  • Care permanently for Wales’ rich archive of the historic environment in the National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW); 
  • Support people to learn about our rich heritage through online resources, community outreach and publications; 
  • Provide impartial advice and information to help people manage the historic environment sustainably and ethically. 
Building on our recent successes and achievements, we’re now looking to grow and develop our organisation for the future. We’re looking for people to join our Board of Commissioners who are prepared to help direct, challenge and constructively review our work. We’re committed to strengthening and diversifying our board, and so are looking for new members who have experience or expertise in one or more of these areas:
  • Have experience in commercial ways of working, marketing and PR, and a proven record of fundraising; 
  • Have expertise in archive management; 
  • Have expertise in working with communities, particularly hard-to-reach groups, at a strategic level, and a commitment to the principles of equality and diversity; 
  • Providing oversight and constructive challenge to organisations with charitable aims; 
  • Have knowledge of, and a successful track record, in a senior governance role.

Jobs Opportunities at the Royal Commission






 
 
The Royal Commission is seeking to fill three important roles to support development into the next chapter of its 106 year history.
 
 
Based in Aberystwyth, The Royal Commission is the investigation body and national archive for the historic environment of Wales. We have the lead role in ensuring that Wales’s archaeological, built and maritime heritage is authoritatively recorded, and seek to promote the understanding and appreciation of this heritage nationally and internationally. One of the three ‘national collections’, the National Monuments Record of Wales is our principal asset, which contains over 1.25 million images of the historic environment of Wales, as well as text documents, artworks and other records numbering to the hundreds of thousands.
 
 
These three posts are fundamental to ensuring that we fulfil our responsibilities to the people of Wales, our Royal Warrant and the Welsh Government, in making the National Monuments Record for Wales as widely accessible as we can. The ideal candidates will have a passion for the history of Wales, and will delight in contributing to our public service work.

Job Vacancy - Finance Manager (Strategy & Resources Team)

The Royal Commission is seeking a new Finance Manager to fill an important role in the next chapter of our 106 year history.

Based in Aberystwyth, The Royal Commission is the investigation body and national archive for the historic environment of Wales. The Finance Manager at the Commission will be responsible for all aspects of the Commission’s financial management, ensuring that we fulfil our responsibilities to our Royal Warrant and the Welsh Government.

The Finance Manager will be a proactive and effective manager with experience of all aspects of the financial management of an organisation. As well as being confident and self motivated with good communication and IT skills (including Sage), candidates must have proven experience and/or appropriate professional or academic qualifications in a relevant discipline.

Applications would also be welcomed from those who have experience of managing the finances of Heritage Lottery Fund or European Union funded projects or of charitable organisations. Developing and maintaining positive and professional working relationships with staff and external contacts is integral to this post. As such, the ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh would also be an advantage.

The Royal Commission is seeking a new Secretary (Chief Executive) to lead and inspire our staff and volunteers through the next chapter of our 106 year history.

The Royal Commission is the investigation body and national archive for the historic environment of Wales. The Secretary of the Commission is responsible for the leadership, strategy, guardianship and management of the Royal Commission, ensuring it fulfils the responsibilities detailed in its Royal Warrant and its remit as set by the Welsh Government.

Following a ministerial commitment to it remaining an independent body, this is a remarkable opportunity to lead, inspire and motivate the Commission through a period of change within the organisation and the wider historic environment sector in Wales. The Secretary will build on a solid platform of success and seize opportunities to drive change that will support an ambitious vision for the future to ensure the long-term sustainability of the organisation and its contribution to sectoral agendas.

The Secretary will be an experienced leader with an outstanding record of delivery and achievement in representing an organisation at a senior level. Passionate about leading staff and volunteers and resilient in the delivery of the Commission’s duties to maintain and develop the National Monuments Record, to act as a leader in the survey and investigation of the historic environment and to promote the widest possible understanding of and engagement in the heritage of Wales, the Secretary will drive the Royal Commission with pace, energy and imagination, and be a dedicated champion for its work.

Sponsored by the Welsh Government and based in Aberystwyth, the Royal Commission is the investigation body and national archive for the historic environment of Wales. It has the lead role in ensuring that Wales’s archaeological, built and maritime heritage is authoritatively recorded, and promotes the understanding and appreciation of this heritage nationally and internationally.

We are looking for someone to provide strong leadership for the Royal Commission. Acting as Curator of the National Monuments Record for Wales, the appointee will take overall responsibility for its ongoing development as a major national resource and one of the three Welsh national collections. Reporting to the Commission’s Chairman and Commissioners and accountable to the Welsh Government, the Secretary will be responsible for delivering against the Commission’s Royal Warrant and the Welsh Government’s remit. Working across and beyond the historic environment sector to promote collaboration and partnership the Secretary will be expected to drive the Commission in meeting its responsibilities for the historic environment, the Programme for Government, and ultimately the people of Wales.

Candidates must have proven or demonstrable experience at a senior level in an organisation concerned with the understanding and/or management of the historic environment. They must be able to demonstrate success in programme management and the delivery of projects to time and to budget. The successful candidate must be able to evidence excellent business management skills and commercial awareness together with experience in building exemplary relationships with a range of partners. Evidence of developing and delivering initiatives funded by external partners is also required. The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh would be an advantage.
