Tai Gweithwyr Cymru

Tai gweithwyr Cymru - pwysigrwydd cofnodi’r tai hyn.
Digwyddiad yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Wrecsam a'r Fro

Dydd Mawrth, 2 Awst 2011 am 2 o’r gloch - Pabell y Cymdeithasau 2

Tai gweithwyr Cymru - pwysigrwydd cofnodi’r tai hyn.
Sgwrs gan Spencer Smith, Comisiwn Brenhinol Henebion Cymru, ar bwysigrwydd gwaith y Comisiwn yn cofnodi tai gweithwyr Cymru.

Croeso i bawb

Hen-daid a hen-nain Spencer Smith ar garreg drws y tŷ yr oeddynt wedi’i adeiladu eu hunain yn y Rhos, Wrecsam.
Faint wyddoch chi am y tai lle ganed eich cyndeidiau?  Faint mae’r tai hyn wedi newid ers eu cyfnod hwy?  Wrth gofnodi tai gweithwyr Cymru, mae gwybodaeth wedi dod i’r amlwg ynghylch sut y newidiodd Cymru yn ystod y Chwyldro Diwydiannol yn ogystal â gwybodaeth ynghylch sut yr oedd teuluoedd yn adeiladu eu tai eu hunain.

Welsh Workers' Housing

Welsh workers' housing – the importance of recording these houses.

Event at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, Wrexham and District

Tuesday 2 August 2011 at 2pm - Pabell y Cymdeithasau 2

Spencer Smith, Royal Commission, will be delivering a talk on the importance of recording the houses of Wales’s industrial workers ‘Tai gweithwyr Cymru - pwysigrwydd cofnodi’r tai hyn’.

A warm welcome to you all.

Spencer Smith’s great-grandfather and great-grandmother on the doorstep of the house they built for themselves in Rhos, Wrexham.
How much do you know about the houses where your forefathers were born? How much have these houses changed since then?  The recording of Welsh workers’ housing has brought to light information about how Wales changed during the Industrial Revolution and also about how families would build their own homes.

Royal Welsh Showground Visitors Enjoying Images Of Caernarfonshire

Showground-visitors to the Royal Commission's stand viewing exhibition panels.
On Monday 18 July many people visited the Royal Commission stall at the Royal Welsh Show. Throughout the day, showground-visitors came and viewed the eighteen large exhibition panels, especially created for this year’s show and based on the host county of Caernarfonshire. From stunning aerial photographs of historic landscapes and industrial sites to reconstruction drawings of houses and cottages these illustrate the huge range of images available in the National Monuments Record at the Royal Commission. Many of these images are available on Coflein, our online database www.coflein.gov.uk

300 Visitors Joined Royal Commission Staff At The Abermagwr Open Day

Visitors enjoying Toby Driver’s informative talk and a rare break from the rain!
On Saturday 16 July, over 300 visitors joined Royal Commission staff at the Open Day of Abermagwr Roman villa near Trawscoed. Throughout the day and in between torrential rain showers, they were led by Royal Commission archaeologist Toby Driver in a most enthustically presented tour of the partially excavated Romano-British villa where questions surrounding this amazing discovery were answered. Many children seized the opportunity to dig in the carefully prepared children’s trench running alongside the site of the villa. Here a number of interesting items were unearthed, including fragments of medieval pottery and some nineteenth-century porcelain. On the site of the villa itself numerous pieces of earthenware including a late Roman Black-burnished ware cooking pot from Dorset, Roman coins and even a gold bead have been found as well as many of the distinctive pentagonal stone tiles which are thought to have roofed this substantial estate-villa. Many of the exhibits are currently on show in the Ceredigion Museum.

Two enthusiastic young archaeologists proudly displaying their finds.

Bardsey Island Important Place Of Pilgrimage In The Middle Ages

Ynys Enlli / Bardsey Island
GTJ00234   NPRN 402783
Mae Ynys Enlli bron i ddwy filltir y tu hwnt i ben draw Llŷn. Mae yno bron 450 o aceri ac anheddiad o ryw ddeuddeg i bymtheg o dai. Arferai’r ynys fod yn gyrchfan bwysig i bererinion ac yn safle mynachlog drwy gydol yr Oesoedd Canol. Ychydig o’r fynachlog sydd i’w weld heblaw adfeilion y tŵr. Rhwng 1870 a 1875 fe ailgodwyd y ffermydd ac maent yn enghreifftiau diddorol o gynllunio amaethyddol. Cynlluniwyd y goleudy gan Joseph Nelson a chwblhawyd ei godi yn 1821.

The island of Bardsey, or Ynys Enlli, lies nearly two miles off the extreme west end of Llŷn. The total area is nearly 450 acres with a settlement of twelve to fifteen houses. The island was an important place of pilgrimage and monastic settlement throughout the middle ages. Apart from a ruined tower, little remains visible of the monastery. Between 1870 and 1875 the farms were rebuilt and are interesting examples of agricultural planning. The prominent lighthouse designed by Joseph Nelson was completed in 1821.
