Conference participants exploring Fort Belan near Caernarfon |
The Fortress Study Group is the only international society concerned with the study of all aspects of military architecture and fortifications and their armaments, especially works constructed to mount and resist artillery. Every September the Fortress Study Group holds a weekend conference with a programme of lectures and visits to local fortifications, and this year North Wales was chosen.
RAF Valley most kindly offered accommodation and provided excellent meals and packed lunches for the 40 plus participants. A tour of the base, which trains jet combat pilots and Sea King search and rescue crews , was a very special part of the weekend of lectures and trips to visit locations such as Caernarfon Castle, Fort Belan, Conwy Castle, Air World Museum at Caernarfon Airport, Dinas Dinlle and Holyhead.
The conference held on 3-5 September, 2010, was organized by members of the Chapel Bay Fort Project, Pembrokeshire, and RCAHMW staff member, Medwyn Parry.

As a relatively new member of the FSG this was the first conference I had attended and I was not disappointed, the depth and range of periods covered was superb and illustrated the the rich and varied military history of Wales. The conference also provided the opportunity to meet many interesting people with a shared interest. Well done to all those involved in organising the weekend!.
